Requirements for an M1 Student Visa

  1. Individuals who wish to avail an M1 student visa cannot do so if they intend to study "generally". The program chosen by the individual should have a goal.
  2. Moreover, to qualify for an M1 visa, the applicant should undertake a "full course of study", which means that he/she will have to enroll in a junior or community college that has a minimum of 12 quarter or semester hours.
  3. The institution in which the applicant enrolls should charge full tuition for at least 12 quarter or semester hours, or must be considered full-time. Exceptions are only allowed in case the applicant needs to undertake a course with a shorter load and duration to complete his/her course of study.
  4. Even a course of study undertaken at post-secondary business or vocational schools that grant associate or other degrees is allowed under the M1 visa. At the same time, in case a school can prove that its credits are or were accepted unconditionally by a minimum of three institutions of higher education, it can qualify for the M1 visa.
  5. In case the school cannot demonstrate the same, the course of study can be undertaken in a non-academic or vocational curriculum, authorized by a DSO to need a minimum attendance of 18 hours per week, or a minimum of 22 clock hours per week (in case a major part of the curriculum is covered in a lab or shop).
  6. In case the applicant cannot adhere to this either, the only remaining option will be to undertake a course of study in a non-academic or vocational high school curriculum that is authorized by a DSO.

  4. The university/school will send a list to the applicant, and all the documents required therein must be submitted to the school for verification, after which you will know whether or not your application has been accepted.
  1. After the school/university has ascertained your eligibility following the verification of the documents you have sent, an I-20 form will be issued so that you can proceed with applying for the student visa.
  2. Individuals who apply for student visa usually have to apply at the US Consulate or Embassy with jurisdiction over the individual's permanent residence address, which is usually in the applicant's home country or the country in which he/she resides.
