How to Enable International Transactions on ICICI Debit Card

For ICICI Bank customers that are planning on making a travel for business or just for a holiday, what would save them a bit of money is ensuring that their debit card comes with international usage as well.

To avoid being charged extra, customers can enable the international usage of their debit card before setting out on their travel abroad.

For ICICI Bank customers that are wondering how they can do this without having to visit the bank, they have three options - via SMS, by calling the customer care unit and through the ICICI Bank iMobile app.

Steps to Enable International usage for ICICI Bank Debit Card through SMS

ICICI Bank customers can follow the steps mentioned below to activate the international usage on their debit card via the SMS facility:

Step 1: The customer has to first ensure that his/her mobile number is registered with ICICI Bank.

Step 2: To activate their international usage on their ICICI Bank debit card, all that the customer has to do is to message INTL to 5676766.

Step 3: Once that is done, the bank will send you a confirmation message saying that the international usage has been activated on your debit card.

Steps to Activate International Transactions for ICICI Debit Card through iMobile App

For ICICI Bank customers that have the iMobile app facility, they can follow the steps mentioned below to activate their international usage on their debit card:

Step 1: Login to the ICICI Bank iMobile Banking app using your username and password.

Step 2: One logged in, choose the service tab.

Step 3: Then, Click on "services".

Step 4: Now, Choose "card services" from the other options.

Step 5: The page will now display a number of services, choose the "modify debit card limit" option.

Step 6: Choose the debit card you wish to enable international usage. Next, choose "activate".

Step 7: Enter the transaction limit at POS terminals and the withdrawal limit at ATMs.

Step 8: Click on "submit".

As soon as that is done, ICICI Bank will send you an intimation message that your international usage on your debit card has been activated.

Steps to Enable International usage for ICICI Bank Debit Card by Customer Care Unit

If suppose the ICICI Bank customer does not have the ICICI Bank iMobile app service, he/she can carry out the process just by calling the customer care unit of ICICI Bank.

Step 1: For this, the customer has log on to the ICICI Bank customer care service on the main banking page of ICICI Bank.

Step 2: The customer has to then choose the customer care number depending on where they are residing or where their account is held.

Step 3: Once the customer has called the customer care unit of ICICI Bank, one should give them the debit card number and request them to enable the international debit card usage on it.

Step 4: The international usage activation will take place on the call. ICICI Bank will then send you an SMS that your debit card has been enabled for international usage.

Steps to Use ICICI Debit Card at Merchant Outlets Abroad

If you want to use your ICICI debit card to make transactions at merchant outlets abroad, follow the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: To find out whether a merchant accepts card payments, search for the Visa/MasterCard sign.

Step 2: Provide your debit card to make a purchase.

Step 3: The merchant will dip/swipe your card.

Step 4: Enter the ATM PIN if the chip card is dipped (in some countries, transactions involving non-chip cards may not require the ATM PIN).

Step 5: Sign the charge slip.

Steps to Use ICICI Debit Card to Withdraw Cash from ATMs Abroad

For ATM cash withdrawals overseas, you can use your ICICI debit card by following these steps:

Step 1: Check the ATM's Visa/MasterCard sign to see if your card is accepted.

Step 2: Insert your debit card into the ATM machine.

Step 3: Enter your ATM PIN and the withdrawal amount.

Step 4: Obtain cash and a print of the charge slip.

Step 5: Save the charge slip for future reference.

  • Do I have to provide my ATM PIN at every POS terminal?

    In India, a PIN will be required for all transactions. You won't be prompted for a PIN overseas unless the POS terminal is set up for PIN authentication.

  • What if I have done the above mentioned steps yet my debit card is still not activated for international usage?

    In this case, call the customer care unit of ICICI Bank and ask them to look into the matter right away.

  • Are there any charges for activating the international usage on my ICICI debit card?

    For the options of activating your international usage for your ICICI debit card through the ICICI Bank iMobile app there will be no charges. However, for the SMS option and the option of calling the customer care unit of ICICI Bank, regular SMS and call charges will be applicable.

However, as compared to using a domestic debit card abroad to make transactions and withdrawals, this option is relatively cheaper.

  • Will my personal accident insurance coverage and air accident insurance be increased when I activate the international usage on my ICICI Bank debit card?

    Your personal accident insurance coverage and air accident coverage is unlikely to change just by making this small change. However, check with the bank with regard to this.

  • Can I make transactions and withdrawals in any type of foreign currency after activating the international usage on my ICICI Bank debit card?

    It depends on your bank and your card associate. Before setting out on your travel ensure you make sure that the foreign currency of the place that you would be visiting is available for conversion from Indian rupees. Note, when you are making a transaction abroad, the money will be debited in Indian rupees from your account despite you making transactions in a foreign currency, The conversion is susceptible to change every day.
