All states in the country charge their residents road tax and Jammu and Kashmir are no exception. Road tax is imposed by both the state and central government and the amount paid differs based on the type of vehicle in addition to other features.
On-road price in Jammu and Kashmir (Capital City: Srinagar) is the manufacturer price plus the cost of registration and taxes due to the central and state government and the cost of vehicle insurance.
The taxes charged on the vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir are based on the provisions of Section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. This Section states the guidelines on how to calculate tax on the vehicles sold or registered in Jammu and Kashmir.
The road tax is calculated based on the following capacities:
Road tax is different for trucks, vans, cars, two wheelers, etc.
The tax charged on 2 wheelers is based on the cost of the vehicle and its age. The following is the rates for token tax for personalised vehicles:

On 2 June 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir government hiked the road tax on vehicles that have purchased before 3 August 2019. The increase in road tax has been shared with the Transport authorities.
If you fail to pay road tax in Jammu and Kashmir, you will have to pay a fine of up to Rs.100 in addition to the dues. If you do not pay the penalty, your vehicle will be seized.
On paying road tax in Jammu and Kashmir, a monthly, quarterly, or yearly token will be issued to you. This token must be visible on the vehicle. The penalty for displaying the token is Rs.50.
You must pay an additional tax if you have modified your vehicle in any way or made any alterations that cause it to be taxed at a higher rate. The difference between the two tax slabs is the amount of tax paid.
You can pay road tax at your nearest RTO or the place where your vehicle is registered. You also have the option of paying road tax online.
The J&K taxation policy considers the kind of vehicle, seating capacity, model and manufacture, and purpose of usage of the vehicle when determining vehicle tax. In some situations, the engine capacity of the vehicle is also taken into account when determining the tax amount.
