What is Annual Information Statement (AIS)?

The Indian Government has the responsibility to maintain the details of all the taxpayers for a specific year with an Annual Information Statement (AIS). It comprises information related to the incomes of the taxpayers, income tax proceedings, their financial transactions, tax details, etc.

What is the AIS in Income Tax?

AIS contains the details of all the financial transactions that are carried out by a taxpayer in a financial year and every detail about the tax collected at source (TCS) and tax deducted at source (TDS).

This single reference document contains more details than Form 26AS and it is recommended to reconcile your ITR with your AIS.

  3. Enter the OTP received on registered email address and mobile number

How to set MPIN for AIS for Taxpayer App in mobile?

Here are the steps to set the MPIN for AIS for Taxpayer application in mobile:

  1. Complete the registration process by entering OTP
  2. Enter the MPIN
  1. Click on ‘Next’
  2. Click on ‘Confirm’ after entering the MPIN

After completing the process, MPIN will be generated, and user will be registered. Further users will be able to login into the application using their MPIN.

How to Check your AIS?

Step 1: Log in to income tax official website at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.

Step 2: You will be redirected to your profile.

Step 3: Click on ‘Services’ from the top panel.

Step 4: From the drop-down list, click on ‘Annual Information Statement’.

Step 5: You will receive a popup message redirecting you to the AIS Homepage.

Step 6: Click on ‘Proceed’.

Step 7: On the new page, you can find the TIS and AIS.

Step 8: Choose the financial year to find the data and download the file in your preferred format.

How to Open AIS PDF?

AIS PDF files are password protected and hence, you need to unlock it using the correct format of the password. Enter the PAN number in lower case and date of incorporation of non-individual taxpayer or date of birth in the format DDMMYYYY without any space in between.

For example, if the PAN is ABABA5678B and date of birth is 7 January 1996, then the AIS PDF password would be ababa5678b07011996.

Differences Between AIS and Form 26AS

According to the official website of Income Tax Department AIS is the extension of the form 26AS. Details of real estate acquisitions, high-value investments, and TDS/TCS transactions made during the financial year are shown in Form 26AS.

In addition, AIS contains income from savings accounts, dividends, rent paid, purchases and sales of stocks and real estate, international transfers, interest on deposits, GST turnover, etc. The taxpayer has the chance to comment on the reported transactions through AIS as well.
