Regional Passport Offices in India

Regional Passport Offices (RPOs) are government offices under the Ministry of External Affairs. They handle the issue, renewal, and other passport-related services for Indian citizens. Each RPO covers a specific area based on the applicant’s location. They also work with Passport Seva Kendras and post offices to provide these services locally. There are 180 Indian embassies and consulates as well as 37 regional passport offices.

The demand for passports and related services has grown as the economy and globalisation in the nation have expanded. Given this, the government launched the Passport Seva Project (PSP) in May 2010 with a focus on improving the passport services.

The project, which has been developed in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode with Tata Consultancy Services, aims to provide a straightforward, effective, and transparent procedure for the delivery of passport and related services.

List of Regional Passport Offices

As mentioned earlier, there are a total of 37 passport offices in the country. These offices are in addition to the 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) that have been made operational in the country as part of the Passport Seva project. The Regional Passport Offices (RPO) in the country are located at every nook and corner of the country.

Bengaluru Regional Passport Office (RPO)

The Madras Regional Passport Office (RPO) was divided, and the Bengaluru RPO was established in June 1978. Almost 29 years after it was established, the RPO just began operating in its own facilities in April 2007 at 8th Block, 80 Feet Road, Koramangala, Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Bengaluru RPO is responsible for five Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) situated in Lalbagh, Sai Arcade, Dharwad, Mangalore, and Kalaburagi as well as one Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) established in Mysuru.

The office had 76 officers and employees as of March 21, 2018. In 2017, the office processed 7,24,412 applications and provided 7,14,162 applicants with passports and other services.

Delhi Regional Passport Office (RPO)

  One of the initial five passport offices established in the nation was the Delhi RPO. The office was established in 1954 and officially opened as a MEA subsidiary directed by the Central Passport Organization (CPO).   

The RPO, which is based in New Delhi at Hudco Trikoot-3, Bhikaji Cama Place, R.K Puram, provides passport services to Delhi and nine districts of Haryana. The RPO oversees the operation of four PSKs, which are situated in Gurgaon, Herald House-ITO, R.K. Puram, and Shalimar Place.

The office had 97 employees and 24 officers as of April 30, 2018. The office received 6,49,082 applications in 2017, and 6,38,873 of the applicants obtained passport and other services.

Chennai Regional Passport Office (RPO)

Located at Royala Towers Number 2 and 3, IV Floor, Old Number 785, New Number 158, Anna Salai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the RPO was set up in the year 1955. Initially the RPO was catering to the needs of people from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

Currently, it serves the people who reside in Chennai, Chennai Sub Urban, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Kanchipuram, Krishnagiri, Puducherry, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, and Villupuram. The office has a total of 74 officers and staff members and supervises four PSKs and POPSKs.

The PSKs are located at Aminjikarai, Saligramam, Tambaram, and Puducherry while the POPSKs are located at Vellore, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Tiruvannamalai. In 2017, the RPO received 5,01,805 applications while the services rendered with regard to passports and miscellaneous services was 4,93,798.

Mumbai Regional Passport Office (RPO)

In 1954, the Ministry of External Affairs established the Mumbai Regional Passport Entity, a subsidiary office that reports to the Joint Secretary (CPV).

The Joint Secretary serves as the Ministry of External Affairs' Chief Passport Officer in New Delhi. In 2017, 6,53,029 applications were received by the office, situated at Videsh Bhavan, Bandra Kurla Complex, Plot Number C-45, G Block, Bandra (East), Mumbai. Of them, services were provided to 6,09,717 applicants. 

The office, which has 103 staff members overall, is in charge of five PSKs that work under it. Andheri, Lower Parel, Malad, Thane II, and Nashik II are the locations of the PSKs.

Chandigarh Regional Passport Office (RPO)

The RPO which was established in 1969 serves the Union Territory of Chandigarh along with 12 districts each of Punjab and Haryana.  

The office which is located SCO 28-32, Sector 34-A, Chandigarh was computerized in 1996. As of 31 March 2017, the total strength of the office was only 82 which included of 15 officers and 67 staff members. It must be mentioned that the sanctioned strength of employees in the office is 127, comprising 37 officers and 90 staff members.   

Under the RPO, three PSKs located at Ambala, Ludhiana, and Chandigarh functions. In 2017, 6,06,535 applicants were rendered passport and miscellaneous services while the total number of applications received were 6,31,751.

Ahmedabad Regional Passport Office (RPO)

The Ahmedabad RPO was established in 1969 and provides services relating to passports to the residents of the regions of north Gujarat, central Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch. 24 districts in all are covered by the RPO.

The office has a total of 91 employees and is situated on University Road, Gulbai Tekra, beside the L.D Engineering College Hostel in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. In 2017, the office received 6,47,952 applications, and 6,43,446 of those applicants received services.

Four PSKs operating under the RPO are situated in Mithakhali, Rajkot, Vadodara, and Vijay Cross Road.

Goa Regional Passport Office (RPO)

After being taken over by the Ministry of External Affairs from the Goa State Home Department, the Regional Passport Office in Goa began operations in 1988. The North and South Goa populations are served by the office, which is situated in Passport Bhavan, EDC Complex, Patto, Panaji, Goa.

The regional passport office, guided by the MEA's objective, strives to provide individuals with passport services in a fast, transparent, accessible, and dependable way while maintaining a pleasant environment. One PSK and one POPSK operate under the control of the RPO, which has a total of 27 officers.

The POPSK was established in the Margao office of the South Goa Collectorate, whilst the PSK is housed in the same structure as the RPO. The RPO received 57,297 applicants in 2017.

Trivandrum Regional Passport Office (RPO)

Trivandrum RPO began operations in 1992 and is situated at SNSM Building, Karalkada Junction, Pettah P.O, Trivandrum, Kerala. The office serves the districts of Trivandrum City, Trivandrum Rural, Pathanamthitta, and Kollam City.

Three PSKs and one POPSK have been established in Kerala thanks to the Trivandrum Regional Passport Office. The POPSK is located in Pathanamthitta, while the PSKs are in Kollam, Neyyattinkara, and Vazhuthacaud.

The office, which employs 45 officers and employees in total, provided passport and other services to 2,43,580 applicants. 2,40,670 brand-new applications were submitted to the office in 2017.

Hyderabad Regional Passport Office (RPO)

Regional Passport Office, Hyderabad was opened in 1976 as a subordinate office of Ministry of External Affairs supervised by Central Passport Organization. 

While it started off as a small organization, today, it is the second biggest passport office after the one in Mumbai. Located in Door Number 8-2-215 to 219, Kummarguda, Secunderabad, the office offers passport services to the citizens of 35 districts.

The office has a strength of 109 officers and staff members as of 16 May 2018. Six PSKs which are located at Ameerpet, Begumpet, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Tirupati, and Toli Chowki function and reports to Hyderabad RPO. In 2017, the office rendered passport services to 6,10,217 applicants.

Pune Regional Passport Office (RPO)

 Pune Regional Passport Office which caters to twelve districts started functioning in June 1999. The office performed as a subordinate office of the Ministry of External Affairs under the supervision of Central Passport Organization.

It was created after the bifurcation of Mumbai RPO and is currently located at Senapati Bapat Road, MSFC building, opposite Symbiosis college, Pune.

The office which has a strength of 45 officers and staff members covers the districts of Ahmednagar, Beed, Jalna, Kolhapur, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Pune City, Pune Rural, Sangli, Satara, Solapur City, and Solapur Rural. In 2017, the office received 3,58,132 applications while 3,53,511 passport and miscellaneous services were rendered.

Surat Regional Passport Office (RPO)

Surat RPO was opened in the year 2003, with the aim of providing service to passport applications in South Gujarat region. The RPO at Surat is at Plot No.174, Near Grahaq Bhawan, opposite Police quarters, Umar Road, Surat (395007)

News on Regional Passport Offices in India

Passport issuance by the Bengaluru RPO reached 518,000 from January to July

The Bengaluru Regional Passport Office achieved a record this year. It issued 518,000 passports from January to July. This is an increase from 387,000 last year and 312,000 in 2022. Among these, 14 were for transgender people. Regional Passport Officer K. Krishna attributed the growth to increased international travel by students. The office expects to surpass its annual record. The RPO also fast-tracked a passport for a Mysuru woman to help her travel to Germany for her critically ill son.

Special passport drives to be conducted in five Passport Seva Kendras in Hyderabad

In Hyderabad, special passport drives are to be conducted in five Passport Seva Kendras by the Regional Passport Office under the Ministry of External Affairs. Five Passport Seva Kendras, including Tolichowki, Karimnagar, Ameerpet, Nizamabad, Begumpet, and 14 other Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, will conduct this drive. A total of 3,641 appointments will be made available on 8 July, and the appointments will be available in the Passport Seva portal. Scheduling or rescheduling passport appointments can be done by the applicant either through the mPassportseva app or www.passportindia.gov.in.
