From July 1st, 2017 onwards, as per a new law passed by the government of India, your Aadhaar and Permanent Account Number (PAN) have to be linked for e-filing your income tax returns. To do this, you have to register your PAN number on the income tax department website's e-filing portal.

Procedure for PAN Card Registration

Step 1 - Visit the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department

Step 2 - Click on the 'Register Yourself' tab.

Step 3 - Select the user type and click on 'Continue'.

Step 4 - Enter your personal details such as name, gender, and date of birth

Step 5 - Fill up the online registration form with the correct details.

Step 6 - After form submission, a link will be sent to your email ID.

Step 7 - Click on this link to activate your account.

Common Errors in PAN Card Registration

While applying for a PAN Card, it is important to check that all your details are accurate to avoid any further issues. Common errors may include:

  1. There could be a spelling mistake in the individual name or father’s name while filling in the PAN application form.
  1. The date of birth on the PAN Card could be wrong if incorrect information is provided on the application form.
  1. The residential address could be incorrect if there is a mismatch between the documents submitted as proof of address.
  1. Gender mismatch is also a common error during the application process of the PAN Card, such as "Female" instead of 'Male,'.
  1. Sometimes, the photograph on the PAN Card may be someone else's due to an incorrect photo being attached during the application process.

How to Check PAN Card Information?

One way of finding out your PAN details is through the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department website

Step 1 - Enter your account number and click on 'My Account'.

Step 2 - Go to 'Profile Settings' and click on 'PAN Details'.

Step 3 - Your Permanent Account Number (a 10-digit alphanumeric code), permanent address, and other personal details will be displayed on the screen.

How to Fix Errors in PAN Card Registration

If there are any errors in your PAN Card, you can correct them via the online eKYC process or by offline process. Both methods are given as follows:  

Online Process

  1. Visit the official website of NSDL. Under the tab ‘Tax Modernization’ click on the option "PAN".  
  1. Click on “Apply Now” and you will be directed to a new page. Under applicant type, click on "Changes or Correction in PAN Data/Reprint" and you need to complete an application form. 
  1. Once you submit the form, an application number will be allotted to you which you need to keep for future reference. 
  1. Click on "Continue with PAN Application" and select the eKYC option. You need to provide the last four digits of the Aadhaar number. You will be directed to autofill your details. 
  1. Fill in the details accurately and attach the required documents. 
  1. Pay the required fees via credit card, debit card, or net banking. 
  1. You will get your corrected PAN Card within two hours once you provide consent for Aadhaar authentication and e-sign the form digitally. 

Offline Process

  1. Visit your nearest PAN service centre and ask for the PAN correction form.
  1. Fill in the form accurately and attach the required documents such as proof of identity, address, and date of birth.
  1. Submit the applicable fee and the application form. You will need to complete the biometric authentication process.
  1. You will receive your corrected PAN Card at your address in 15 days.
