According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the number of banks live on UPI is 358 and over Rs.11 Crore transactions have already been made through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in September 2022. Generating MPIN Using UPI Apps

MPIN is applicable for performing banking services through UPI apps. UPI apps also help users to generate MPIN. Here are the steps of doing so:

  1. Enter ID and password to log in to your UPI application
  2. Select the account management option

  2. Follow the instructions stepwise to generate a new MPIN

How to Set MPIN via Net Banking

Here are the steps to generate MPIN through Net Banking:

  1. Enter ID and password to log in to your banking portal
  1. Select ‘MPIN’ option under ‘Mobile Banking’ option from the menu
  2. Click on ‘Setup MPIN’
  3. Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number to authenticate
  4. Enter your preferred four or six (for some banks)
  5. SMS link will be received on the registered mobile number

How to Generate MPIN from Bank Branch

Users without internet facilities can access this method to generate MPIN. Here are the steps to get a new MPIN through USSD code:

  1. Dial *99#
  2. Press the number written before ‘Generate MPIN’
  3. Enter the last six-digit of respective bank card number(space)expiry date
  4. Enter new MPIN and send to generate the new MPIN.

How to Change MPIN?

The steps required to change your MPIN are as follows: 

Step 1: Launch the mobile banking app on your phone. 

Step 2: Log in by entering your MPIN or login credentials. 

Step 3: Search the app for the 'More' option or go to the 'Settings' section. 

Step 4: Under the ‘Settings’ section, choose the option to modify your MPIN. 

Step 5: Enter both your existing MPIN and the new MPIN you want to set. 

Step 6: Verify the accuracy of the MPIN entry by confirming it. 

Step 7: You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. 

Step 8: Validate the updated MPIN by entering the OTP within the allotted time. 

You can also change the MPIN through a UPI app by following the steps listed above.

  • Can I keep my ATM PIN as MPIN?

    Yes, you make ATM PIN and MPIN same but avoid keeping both the PINs same to secure your online transaction and ATM or POS transactions from the merchant’s end.

  • Can I get OTP for MPIN generation on any mobile number?

    No, OTP for MPIN generation is sent only on your registered mobile number. You cannot receive it on any random mobile number which is not registered to your bank account.
