Observances

Hanukkah starts in the month of Kislev, which is the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar, on the 25th day of the month. In the Gregorian calendar, this falls in late November or late December.

The festival is observed with the lighting of a candelabrum, which is a candle tree with multiple arms. For Hanukkah, a candelabrum with 9 arms is lit, which is called a hanukkiah or menorah. One of the branches is above the others. The candle on that branch is used to light the other 8 candles. The candle used to light all the other candles is called the shamash. One candle is lit each night by the shamash until all 8 candles are lit by the eighth night of the festival. In many countries, the menorah is lit in public places as well as homes and synagogues.

Celebrations

Hanukkah is celebrated by playing games (called dreidel) and eating special delicacies such as latkes. The Indian Jewish community has special foods for Hanukkah such as Malida (flattened rice).
