The first event of Chapchur Kut is Kut Puipate, an inauguration ceremony organised by the Katna during which the dance groups perform their traditional dances in the stadium. Senior members of the society don traditional attire to represent the state's tribes and take part in a parade known as the Kut rore when the Then Hnihna begins. Several tribal dances, including the Cheraw, also referred to as the bamboo dance, come next. Then Thumna, which features local vocalists performing beloved songs to an applauding audience, brings the event to a close.
Farmers fell bamboo trees and prepare the ground for jhum cultivation or seasonal farming to signal the start of farming. This is the season when they engage in a farming method called Chapchar, in which they wait for the piles of chopped bamboo to dry out in the sun before setting them on fire. Mizos dress colourfully in traditional clothing and don headgear made of beads and parrot feathers for the celebration. Shoes are not worn in Chapchur Kut. Men who sit on the ground beat the bamboos against one other while only ladies perform a traditional bamboo dance throughout the dance program.
Every village has developed its own style of celebration that is based on their own style, dialect, and spirit. This festival is usually celebrated for four to five days.
