The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is an autonomous statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. It is responsible for funding the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme which is a health scheme specially created for workers in India.

The scheme is self-financed and provides social security for workers in the organised sector in times of medical exigencies like sickness, permanent or temporary physical disablement, maternity, death due to employment injury leading to loss of earning capacity or wages.

The ESIC manages the funds for Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme as per the rules and regulations stipulated in the ESI Act, 1948. The act was created initially for factory workers but has now been extended to all firms or establishments employing 10 or more workers.

How to Register for ESIC Scheme?

Follow the steps mentioned below to register for ESIC scheme:

Step 1: Visit ESIC Portal for registration

Step 2: The employer can click on the 'Employer Login' option present on the home screen to register on the ESIC portal

Step 3: Click on the 'Sign up' button

Step 4: Enter the required details and submit the form

Step 5: The employer will receive the username and password in an email on the registered email ID

Step 6: Click on the 'Employer Login' option present on the home screen and enter the username and password received in the mail

Step 7: Select the 'New Employer Registration' option

Step 8: Choose the 'Type of unit' from the drop-down menu and click on 'Submit'

Step 9: Fill the required details in 'Employer Registration Form 1'

Step 10: After registration, the employer will have to complete the payment.

What Are the Eligibility Criteria to Apply for the ESIC Scheme?

The eligibility criteria for ESIC scheme are as follows:

  1. Non-seasonal establishment or factory having minimum 10 employees (in some states it is 20)
  2. The maximum salary of the employees is Rs.21,000

Under the ESIC scheme, the employee contributes 0.75% of his monthly salary and the employer contributes the remaining 3.25% of the total monthly salary. Only the employees having a salary of less than Rs.176 per day will be exempted from making contributions.

Features and Benefits of the ESI Scheme

  1. The employee's contribution rate is 0.75% of the wages and that of employer's is 3.25% of the wages paid/payable in respect of the employees in every wage period
  2. Beneficiaries enrolled under the scheme are eligible to avail medical treatments for themselves and their family.

  • Is it compulsory for employers to register under ESI?

    Yes, employers who are covered under the ESI Act need to register themselves under the ESI scheme. Companies or organizations which have over ten employees (in some states it is 20 employees) with a maximum salary of Rs.21,000 per month are provided coverage under the ESI Act. They need to register with the ESIC within 15 days from the time the company is covered under the ESI Act.

  • How to check ESI registration of an employee online?

    An employee of a company or a factory registered with the ESIC can check their ESI registration information with the insurance number given to them at the time of ESIC registration. They should visit the official portal of ESIC, click on the ‘Insured Person Login’ button and enter the user number and captcha code. The insurance number is the user number of an employee.

  • What is ESI Code number?

    Employers and employees in India who are covered by the Employee State Insurance Act are given a 17-digit unique identifying number called an ESI (Employee State Insurance) Code Number. A social security and health insurance program for Indian workers is called the ESI Act. Employers that are subject to the ESI Act must register with the ESIC.     An individual's monthly salary must not be more than Rs.21,000 to be eligible for the ESI scheme. However, the maximum salary is Rs.25,000 for individuals with a disability.

    Contributions towards the scheme must be made within 21 days from the month's last date.
