ECI Tells SC: Aadhaar, Ration Card Insufficient to Prove Voter Eligibility in Bihar Case

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has notified the Supreme Court that ration cards and Aadhaar cards are not accepted as proof of eligibility to vote in the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Bihar electoral registers. It was made clear that although Aadhaar can be used to verify identity, it cannot be used to verify citizenship.  In accordance with the National Food Security Act, State officials issue ration cards. Their validity is impacted by the quantity of temporary and fraudulent cards in circulation. As a result, the 11 documents that can be used to confirm a person's eligibility to vote no longer include ration cards. To preserve the validity of the SIR procedure, the ECI pointed out that Aadhaar and ration cards can only be utilized as supporting documentation and not as independent evidence of enrollment in the electoral roll.
