This document may be obtained by all Indian nationals by submitting an application, either online or offline at a Passport Seva Kendra. Many people have numerous questions about passports and the application process.

  • In case an applicant's permanent and present address are different, will he/she have to endorse his/her permanent address instead of the present address in the passport?
    Applicant will only have to endorse his/her present address on the passport and not the permanent address.
  • If an applicant has resided in more than one address in the previous year, will the police verification have to be done for all of the places?
    No, for an individual for the purpose of passport will have to be done to the present address.
  • While applying for a fresh passport, an individual has mentioned the address of the paying guest that he is staying at as present address on the form. In case he shifts to a different address prior to police verification, is there any step that has to be taken?
    In case an individual changes his current residence prior to police verification, he should inform the nearest Police Station's Department in Charge.
  • In case a self employed person has shifted from one city to another and wishes to apply for a passport on a Tatkaal basis, without having a proof of address, what can he/she do?
    • In is compulsory for an individual to submit address proof while applying for a passport. Any one of the following documents will have to be attached as proof of address -
    • Telephone bill/water bill/electricity bill/bank statement of an active account/income Tax Assessment/voter ID/Certificate from an Employer of a reputed company bearing the letterhead of the company/gas Connection.
    • Copy of spouse's passport, as long as applicant's current address matches the one mentioned in the spouse's passport.
    • In case applicant is a minor, copy of parent's passport
    • Aaadhar card
    • Registered rent agreement
  • In case a mentally retarded individual wishes to go abroad for treatment but does not have adequate proof of address, will the individual be able to avail a passport?
    The applicant can apply for a passport but will have to submit address proof of his/her parents/guardians along with proof of date of birth. Passport will be provided based on the approval of the Competent Authority.
  • What are the Passport Seva Kendra's timings and lunch timings?
    The Passport Seva Kendra is open from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Tokens are issued between 9.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and lunch is between 1.30 p.m to 2.00 p.m.
  • When are Short Validity Passports (SVP) issued?
    Short Validity Passports are provided in the following circumstances -
    • If a criminal prosecution against the applicant is underway in any court, the applicant may be given a passport on the condition that the court grant written authorization for the applicant to travel abroad. Normally, a one-year SVP is awarded, subject to any stipulations set out in the Court decision, as per GSR 570 (E) of August 25, 1993.
    • The validity of a passport would be determined on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate authorities.
  • In case an applicant applies for a renewal of Short Validity Passport, what will the validity of this passport be?
    The validity of a passport would be determined on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate authorities.
  • If incorrect details have been printed on the passport, what steps should the holder take? 
    If there are inconsistencies between the information on the submitted application form and the passport booklet, the passport should be returned for the necessary corrections. If the necessary authorities approve the repair, a new booklet with a new passport number will be given. The merits of the case will determine if any further costs are necessary. The applicant can receive advice in some circumstances to also submit an application for a passport reissue. 
  • What should that value of the stamp paper be on which affidavits are executed?
    Affidavits need to be prepared on a non-judicial stamp paper of a minimum value of Rs.10.
  • In case an individual cannot come to the Passport Seva Kendra due to health issues or lack of time, can someone else submit the application on their behalf?
    It is compulsory for all applicants to be physically present while providing the passport application form at the said Passport Seva Kendra.
