How to Transfer Car Ownership?

The process of legally transferring ownership of a vehicle from one individual or organization to another is known as a vehicle ownership transfer. Only three events can result in the transfer of ownership of a car to a new owner: the owner's death, the vehicle's auction, or the vehicle's resale. Applying for a vehicle ownership transfer can be done electronically using the Parivahan site or through the RTO.

Transferring car ownership from one state to another involves several steps, including obtaining necessary forms, submitting documents to the new RTO, and paying road tax. Ensure all required paperwork, like the No Objection Certificate (NOC) and other RTO documents, are correctly submitted for a smooth transfer process.

How to Transfer Vehicle Ownership Online

Given below are the steps you will have to follow to transfer your vehicle from one state to another: 

  1. Select Vehicle-Related Services from the Online Services tab 
  1. Click Proceed after entering your car's registration number 
  1. Select Miscellaneous (TO/CoA/HPA/HPS/HPT/DupRC) 
  1. Click Generate OTP after entering your mobile number 
  1. After entering the OTP, select See Details 
  1. Choose Transfer of Ownership under Application Selection 
  1. Complete the following fields in the Transfer of Ownership Details section: 

     1. Details of the new owner 

     2. Information on insurance 

     3. Address that is permanent 

     4. Present address 

  1. Select Payment and input the necessary amount. Two payment receipts and Forms 29 and 30 will be generated following the online payment of the car ownership change fee 
  1. All parties must sign the hard copies of these agreements 
  1. They must be sent, in person or by mail, to the new RTO along with the original registration certificate, copy of the insurance policy, PUC, and other documents.

Eligibility Criteria:

The eligibility criteria to fulfil in order to get your vehicle ownership transferred from one state to another: 

  1. You must be a citizen of India 
  2. You must be aged 18 years and above 
  1. You must have a valid driving license 
  2. The ownership of the vehicle must be in your name 

Documents Required: 

Given below are the documents you will need to submit: 

  1. Certificate of Registration 
  1. Address Proof such as Aadhaar card, electricity bill, Voter ID etc. 
  1. Certificate of vehicle insurance 
  1. Copy of PAN card, form 28, and PUC Certificate 
  1. Form 29 RTO, Form 30 RTO, Form 31, Form 32, and Form 35. 

When to Transfer Vehicle Ownership?

In the following situations, a vehicle's RC or ownership may be transferred: 

  1. Reselling the Vehicle: You must transfer ownership to the buyer's name when you sell your car or another vehicle. The RTO can enter the new owner's details into its database thanks to the car ownership transfer 
  1. Vehicle Auction: The new owner must make sure that all vehicle name transfer procedures are completed if the vehicle is being sold at auction to settle debts 
  1. Death of Car Owner: The car's ownership passes to the legal heir in the event of the vehicle owner's passing.

How to Apply for RTO Road Tax Refund? 

You can claim a refund if the road tax you paid in the previous state was more than what you paid in the current state. 

In order to do that you will need to submit the following documents first in order to apply for a Road Tax refund: 

  1. The impression of the vehicle's chassis number. 
  1. An NOC authorising the transfer of the car between states. 
  2. Automobile Insurance Certificate. 
  3. A copy of the road tax receipt you received in the new state. 
  4. A copy of the road tax receipt you received from the previous state. 
  5. Provide documentation of the new state. 
  1. Information on the bank account where the check will be deposited. 

However, you will have to be the owner of your vehicle if you wish to apply for a road tax refund.

  • How much does it cost to move a vehicle's registration from one Indian state to another?

    The RTO and the state determine the costs associated with an offline RC transfer of a vehicle. Usually, it costs between Rs.300 and Rs.500, but in locations where smart cards haven't yet been adopted, the price may be even lower. 

  • How much does it cost in Bangalore to transfer ownership of a vehicle?

    If you want to buy or sell a four-wheeled vehicle within Bangalore, you must pay the RC transfer fee in Bangalore of Rs.5,500, of which Rs.5,200 will go to the RTO and Rs.200 will be for a smart card fee.
